The movie is a semi-autobiographical account of Augusten Burroughs' childhood. With an alcoholic father and a bipolar-poet mother with delusions of grandeur, young Augusten Burroughs falls into the care of an unorthodox psychiatrist, Dr. Finch, and spends his adolescent years as a member of Finch's bizarre extended family.
